Mitsubishi Repair: Galant (Eterna) 1988, torque converter, planetary gear

Question
Hi Linda
We have been rebuilding the engine of my daughter's Eterna after a broken cam belt.  The engine is now running just fine, but we have now found we have problems with the transmission. Everything seems OK but when gears are selected the car doesn't move.  We have put in a 2nd hand transmission as the original had seized(but with the original selector cable), and the torque converter has been changed twice, the filter and fluid has been changed. The computer has been checked and looks OK.  After the last torque change the fluid seemed to be circulating, but once topped up to 3/4 full the fluid has not moved.  We thought perhaps that the cable was either too long or too short, or that the gear selector switch needs changing (both are original). Any ideas please, as we are quite baffled

Answer
Cynthia: I would try those things you talked about such as the gear selector switch or the cable try setting it shorter or longer. But I want you to go up on a site, it explains how an automatic transmission works. Then you will understand why I really can not know what is really wrong with you transmission. Such as the Planetary Gear Sets, is controled by the Hydraulic system, oil pump, valve body and bands. Then you have the governor modulator throttle cable that monitor speed and throttle position in order to determine when to shift. But the site is (http://www.familycar.com/Transmission.htm) on that site they might be able to help you too with some idea what might be wrong with your transmission. I hope this helps some and good luck! Linda
