Mitsubishi Repair: 1999 Eclipse turbo - Codes, vacuum leaks, vacuum hoses

Question
Just bought 99 eclipse, 5 days llater begins to sputter some, and engine light appears.  Read codes today - p0301 cyl #1 missfire detected.  Also got the following errors:
catalyst monitor
heated catylst monitor
evaporative system monitor
oxygen sensor monitor
exhaust gas recirculation monitor
Was going to just replace both oxygen sensors, but now am wondering if there is much bigger problem.  Any help is appreciated as local dealership can't get me into shop for 2 weeks.  JD

Answer
John: Hello. Try doing a tune up.. distributor cap, rotor, stark plugs and wires. There is a sensor inside the distributor cap that might help with the miss firing. The catalyst things well your catalyst is getting old. You do not say how many miles is on the car. But you can drive the car with a bad catalytic converter for a while anyway, but by law you are to have one on your car. Oxygen sensors there should be two and not to hard to replace. The Evapoative Emission Control(EVAP) is a charcoal-filled canister, the line connecting the canister to the fuel tank and purge control solenoid valve and also to all kinds of vacuum hoses. You could replace the canister, it sits up by the fire wall in your car. The exhaust gas recuirculaion is all the part of your vacuum system in your car. So you could have some large vacuum leaks is why you are getting all these monitors to light up. Again replacing that canistor might and I say might fix your problem there. The engine light is the computer telling you, that you have a problem or more in the system. I know with vacuum leaks they are often hard to find and should have a shop find that for you. But if that canister needs placing it might help you. You should go to a parts store and buy yourself a repair manual for your car. As you could read through it and it would explain how to check for things but also how to fix them. Such as with pictures even. I like pictures, but anyway. I tell everyone to buy a repair manual for their cars, they cost around $20.00 and are well worth the money. I do hope this helps and good luck! Linda :o)
