Mitsubishi Repair: car problem, throttle position sensor, mitsubishi montero

Question
I have a 97 Mitsubishi Montero ls full size i have a problem. When I'm cruisin at about 25-40 mph i'll step on the gas but it wont accelerate until i put the pedal to the floor the problem is the rpm will jump from 2000 to 5000 in a split second. I already busted a belt and cleaned out the fuel system I thought maybe the fuel filter was clogged but i guess not. What do you think? transmision? timing gear?

Answer
Iban: You should have your throttle position sensor checked, it could be moving and therefore the computer is not reading it right. But then you should maybe have your car coded, AutoZone will do this for free. It would rule out any problems with the computer or the sensors that are through out your car's engine. When is the last time you did a good tune up? Distributor cap, rotor, stark plugs and wires? It still sounds like to me that your car's computer is not reading something right and so when you push it, it jumps. You know don't you that Mitsubishi farmed out the building of their computers to another company which did not make very good ones. A piece will start to leak into the computer and with time it kills off the computer. So you car's computer could be ill. But getting it coded would rule this out. If not an AutoZone other places will do this for a fee. They will took your car's computer up to their computer, it when kicks out any problem or a clean sheet. I hope this helps and good luck!
