Mitsubishi Repair: my tranny is slipping, tranny fluid, steel pieces

Question
my transmission is slipping  how can i be sure its the tranny? fluid is full, what else can i do to be sure before i get screwed on getting it fixed? thanks so much

Answer
Janet: Sometimes but not always, if you change the fluid and the filter it will help this. I know this is going to sound funny to you, but go out warm the car up to temp, then smell the fluid does it smelled burnt? Is it a color other than red, well a redish pink color? Still I would try the getting the fluid and transmission filter changed. And ask to see the pan then the shop puts it off the car, as it will explain a lot as to what is going on with your transmission. If the pan is full of fine steel pieces; you got problems but if a few the changing of the fluid and fliter might help your problem. Do make sure the shop you take your car to, cleans that pan out good too. Ask them to let you see the pan before they put it back on the car, it should be nice and clean. Sometimes to keep a shop honest, if you like ask to see the old filter too just to make sure they did change the filters. You do not say what year this car is or how many miles it has on it. So try the fluid and filter change, see if that helps at all. If not then you should have your car coded, AutoZone will do this for free as you might have a weak sensor causing the problem or it could be the transmission too. Hope this helps some and good luck!
