Mitsubishi Repair: 2001 Eclipse timing belt replacement, timing belt replacement, eclipse gs

Question
We had my wife's Eclipse GS Spyder timing belt replaced the engine is now making more noise and vibrates. The mechanic has tried numerous things but to no avail according to my wife's acceptance. Any ideas about what could cause the vibrations and "grinding" sound upon startup?

Answer
Bryan: I am with your wife, if the car ran ok before the timing belt was replaced but now it has vibrations and a grinding sound. You mechanic did not do something right. I remember a gal that wrote to say she has the timing belt replaced in her car. But the mechanic did not read his repair manual right, because that car had two size bolts that held the timing belt in. With time those bolts broke because they were not in the right places, that of course blew up her engine. So you best be getting that checked, if the mechanic you have now can not fix the problem. Go to another mechanic. It could be that the timing belt was not put in right to the marks, at times those marks are hard to read, could be he did not put the bolts in right, but I can not remember what year this other gal's car was. I would say that vibrations is never good in a car, because to me that means something is out of line. Maybe you have motor mount loose. I worry about your car's engine, if that timing belt is not put in right or bolts are loose, well whatever could be the problem. If running highway speed when the problem lets go, it will take the engine with it. If you like your mechanic, ask him to stand behind his work in that if the problem lets go and takes the engine he will replace it for free. If he will not agree to this, then get someone else to check the work because it sounds like there might be a problem. Hope this helps and good luck! Linda
