Mitsubishi Repair: 2001 Mitsubishi Montero Sport XLS V6 Catalytic Converter, mitsubishi montero sport, 2001 mitsubishi montero

Question
My "Service Engine Soon" light came on and so I took the car in for a check. They said that the catalytic converter needed to be replaced at a total cost of $1200. The service guys also said that it is something that does not need to be fixed anytime soon. Is this accurate and what do you suggest as far as having it fixed or not?  Thanks!

Answer
Kim: By law you are to have a workable catalytic converter on your car. But I don't know a lot of people now days that can come up with $1200.00. So you can save your money, then get it fixed. I had a converter go on my car, it blew out all it's insides and the car kept working. But sometimes when one is bad, when it starts blowing it's insides out, it plugs up and then your car won't run. I think I would look around, check with other shops to get a better cost for this job and then get it fixed. Hope this helps and good luck! Linda
