Mitsubishi Repair: transmission problems, montero sport, last nerve

Question
I have a 99 montero sport v6 engine 3.0L .  I took it on a road trip back home to N.O. and on the way back to Texas it killed on me.  Now the Battery light and the brake lights were on and I changed out the batter before I left thinking that the brake light would go off on it's on.  Needless to say the truck stopped on me on interstate 49.  I got it back home in Texas and found out the the alternator went out also.  So I changed the alternator and went to ride around to charge up the battery.  During the drive the car killed on me again it started back up but it started to strain to move forward.  As I attempted to park in the garage the truck wouldn't go up the hill.  The gear shift wouldn't move unless I put it all the way back or forward.  It would drive in reverse but once in drive it would just stay still but you could hear the motor racing.  Do I need a new transmission? A rebuilt transmission? or Is it possible to change an automatic to a manual?  I looking for the cheapest way out of this dilemma.  It's really working my last nerve and I'm thinking about leaving Mitsubishi's alone.

Answer
Tanika: Why not change the fluid and the filter, see if that helps your transmission? What color is the fluid? Does it smell burnt? If you change it or have a shop do it; make sure that the pan is cleaned up good before putting the new filter into it. Brake light comes on when there is a problem in your system. Could be you are just low of brake fluid. Trying checking that and adding some if your car needs it. The light might go off, other wise get that checked out. You would lose your brakes! I would have the truck coded, AutoZone will do it for free as you might have a sensor out someplace which is causing your problems with the engine dying. Could be with the transmission you might need the linkage ajusted is all, but I still think if you change the fluid and the filter it would help a lot. No you can not change from auto to manual, some people have tried it. But then you would have to change the engine too. After those people did that, they run into a lot of problems. Oh don't give up on Mitsubishi just yet. Try my ideas first and see how that helps with the problems. Hope this helps and good luck!
