Mitsubishi Repair: Mitsubishi Eclipse 2000 , Heater, mitsubishi eclipse 2000, vacuum hoses

Question
When moving car heater works ...blowing hot air. When stopping (at light for example)...Heater blows cold air ? Had thermostat changed , core flushed... doors open OK...no leaks...car has only 40,000 miles on it...fluid level OK ...they said maybe the fins on the waterpump could be worn... I already spent 120.00 and would have to spend another 400.00 for a water pump installed. What if that doesn't fix the problem ?

Answer
Camille: Oh wait a minute, $400.00 for a water pump. Ouch. I would be checking around before I just paid that for that part. But wait a minute is the car loosing water? Do you see a bit of water that would be the color green under your car when you park it someplace. Not a lot mind you, just a bit? If not, I would say no to that water pump. I think you have a vacuum leak. These newer cars such as your's has all kinds of vacuum hoses that control the heater. If you have a leak in one of them, a small one. It would work just fine when the car is zipping down the road. But when you slow the engine down well the car, then the leak start to pull that air well pressure someplace else. And you loose your heat. I would also check about a recall on this car too, for that problem. Try this site, http://www.mitsubishisucks.com they have a list of recalls on your model of car and year. The list is long check out the whole list. But get that shop of your's to check for a vaccum leak and stop pulling your chain about the water pump. If you get all kinds of heat when the car is moving, I would say the water pump is fine. But your shop is trying to make money off you. You need to read up on your car and parts, off the internet. You could get something other than a Mitsubishi part for that car and save a lot of money. It would work just as good. Might check the belt to make sure it is not slipping too. Try the recall place and the vacuum hoses first but then the water pump just not a $400.00 one, ok. Hope this helps and good luck!
