Mitsubishi Repair: eclipse performance, eclipse performance, hp gain

Question
I want to increase the performance in my car.
I was thinking about some headers, new chip, and possibly port the engine.mayb even some nitrous but i don´t want to mess up the engine internals. how do you do it?

Answer
Gabriel,
Different years, models, and options will determine what type of upgrades and performance you can get out of your Eclipse.  You didn't provide me any of that information, so I can't give you specifics for your exact car.  Bottom line: Non-turbo (2.0) Eclipses may get an additional 50-100 hp gain for under $3000, while turbo Eclipses can get an additional 100-250 hp gain for around $3000.  If you have an older 1.8L engine Eclipses, there's little you can do at all.

But before you do any upgrades, you want to be sure your car is mechanically sound and all regular maintenance items have been taken care of and up to date.  Making sure the timing belt has been replaced in the last 45,000 miles is crucial before you start upgrading.

The first stage of upgrades usually includes intake, exhaust, and better fuel delivery.  Nitrous is really only beneficial for non-turbo engines, but should not be performed until all the first stage upgrades performed.

Upgrading your car without in depth knowledge of your car and engine can cause severe damage and lots of wasted time and money.  I have read many, many articles, upgrade sites, and even books about my specific engine and other similar engines.  I've also talked to many mechanics, other Eclipse owners, and even Mitsubishi dealership employees about my car.  Usually the service and parts department folks are the most knowledgeable.  So don't go forward with any upgrades until know all the benefits, costs, and potential problems they could cause.
Good luck!
