Mitsubishi Repair: Mitsubishi transmission, mitsubishi transmission, bearing retainer

Question
Linda, the job was done by a shop that a friend (who is a mechanic) recommended. The shop owner says the trans. is fine mechanically but thinks there may be an electronic problem. He says he gets a code that says "4th gear not synchronized", whatever that means. When I get a chance I'll bring the car to him and he'll go completely over it.
Could it be the computer and if so,wouldn't the failure occur immediately and not after 20 minutes of highway driving?----Question-----
I recently put a rebuilt trans. in my 91 Eclipse. It worked fine for a few days but now after about 13 miles of driving I lose 4th gear and on the highway I have to slow down to 50-55mph to keep the revs down. Any ideas?
-----Answer-----
Bob: Let me tell you what my repair manual says about the loosing of that gear... worn or improperly adjusted linkage, transaxle loose on engine, shift linkage does not work freely, binds, input gear bearing retainer broken or loose, dirt between clutch cover and engine housing, worn shift fork. This is under "slips out of gear". Who put this rebuilt transmission in your car? If was a shop take it back and tell them what it is doing. If you put in, maybe you did not get it hooked up good or else the transmission was not rebuilt right. Hope this helps and good luck.

Answer
Bob: Sorry, sometimes it is darn hard to answer these question by just what people write. Nothing wrong with you or your writing but I like to help people out if I can. How about you got an AutoZone close by? They will code your car for free, then if you ask will explain what sensor is out. I know our cars are controled by many sensors through out our car and all those senors send their readings to the computer. Then it sets things up in a matter of a few seconds. Look Bob, I have looked all through my manual and I find nothing about a sensor or anything like that. But I will send of you, my email address, then I will try today to look around on the internet and see what I can find out. If you got your car coded at AutoZone, it would show up any problems with the sensors or the computer. But you are right I don't see why that problem would not show up right away, it only takes the computer but a few seconds to get things set. To me that sounds like something wrong with the trans or your transaxle. Don't want to cause problems with you and the guy that worked on your car. You said it worked fine for a few days but now it messes up. Look I am 55 years old and I have been working on cars for a long time. Something with this just does not add up to me. But then maybe it is because I am a woman. lol. But look I will look around and call a few people to see what they might tell me. I am going to send you my email address.. write me there and I will let you know what I find out. For right now that is about all I can do. Other wise try the AutoZone or get your car coded someplace to see what that tells you. So that you will be a bit on the up side of your mechanic. I will work on it but this is my lunch break and then I got to get back to work. But I will check all this after work tonight. Hope this helps and good luck. email address oppedal50@yahoo.com
