Mitsubishi Repair: Evolution IV, manual transaxle, clutch plate

Question
i have recently chnaged the clutch of a Evolution IV because of slippage and a sound the i thought were the springs chattering in the clutch. Well when we took it apart the throwoutbearing was locked up and grinding against the pressure plate. The clutch was down to the rivets and therefore we replaced it.  The tranny had an decent amount of play in the input Shaft but nothing that i have ever worried about.  When it was all said and down we replaced the clutch, pressure plat, trowout bearing, and all fluids.  When we started it up with the clutch depressed it sounded great but in neutral when the clutch is released, There is a very loud whining/clunking sound speeding up with the engine rpms. It does the same in drive to so we expect its the tranny. Could it be the play in the shaft making the sound??????

Answer
Hunter: I looked up in my repair manual and it has a troubleshooting page.. there it has a part with this, "Grabbing(chattering) as clutch is engaged", oil on clutch plate lining, burned or glazed facings, worn or loose engine or transaxle mounts, worn splines on clutch plate hub, warped pressure plate or flywheel, burned or smeared resin on flywheel or pressure plate. There has been times after I got a clutch back together, the clutch was no good. But only once or twice in my life time so that could be it too. Also it does take the clutch plate 30 to 40 normal starts for a new one to seat it's self too. Other ides on my part would be loose engine or transaxle mounts, worn differential pinion shaft in case, worn side gear shaft conunterbore in differential case, worn or damage driveaxle inboard CV joints- that is under "Clunk on acceleration or deceleration". That is under Manual Transaxle. Might wait 30 or 40 starts and see if the clutch plate seats it's self and the noise stops. I wish I could be more help, but I really pull most of my ideas on things out of my repair manuals, from years of working on cars and off the internet. The sound you hear might be a lot different to me than to you. But I do hope this helps some and good luck!
