Mitsubishi Repair: 1994 Eclipse Just Dies, kinds of sensors, vacuum leak

Question
My 1994 Eclipse has been having a problem for a couple of months now. I'll be driving across town and out of nowhere the r.p.m. level will drop and go back up very rapidly and then it just dies. Sometimes when it does that I will put the accelerator all the way down and it wont die. But it doesnt seem to matter what gear I am in or anything. My motor is a 1.8L 4 cylinder motor and I really dont know a thing about cars so I apologize if I was vague.

Answer
David: Hello. Got an AutoZone close by? If so, you can have your car coded for free, it will rules out any problems with a weak/bad sensors or the computer is getting bad. It turn out Mitsubishi farmed out the building of their computers to another company and that company did not make very good ones. There is a piece in the computer that will start to leak onto the other parts of the computer and with time it kills off the computer. One of the ways this shows up is with r.p.m. level drop. Your car has all kinds of sensors all over the engine, they tell the computer things and then it sets up the fuel/air mix in but a few seconds. If one sensor is weak or bad, the computer does not know this and will keep trying to run the car like everything was fine. I have to ask when was the last time you do did a tune up? If your code test comes out ok, then I would check the fuel filter, could be a bad stark plug wire someplace or you have a vacuum leak. If you don't know a lot about cars, then you better go to a shop and let them find your problem. You could go out to any parts store, buy a repair manual and then you would understand things better. My oldest son is more into computers than cars, but he did get a repair manual for his car; just so shops can't charge him more money because he doesn't know. Just an idea on my part. Hope this helps and good luck!
