Mitsubishi Repair: Galant 2002 V6 Burning Oil at145000 Miles, weight oil, oil cap

Question
Having couple of problems with my 2002 Galant. 1) It started around 110000 miles that the oil would ooze out of the engine oil cap. Mechanic said that engine is getting worn out so it losing the compressions and the gases are escaping thru the oil cap. Searched on the Internet and some one suggested to replace the PCV valve. Replaced the last aftermarket one with a genuine Mitsubishi PCV valve. The oil oozing stopped for couple of months but started again. 2) three weeks ago, the engine started making a ticking noise. Mechanic checked the oil level and it was bone dry. he said it is burning oil and I should add a quart or two every other week.

Question: Any thing I can do to stop the burning of oil and oil oozing from the oil cap ? Would a thicker oil help. I normally use 10W30, should I be using some thing else ? Mechanic said that he will add the 80w90w transmission oil to the engine oil at the next oil change and that would "take care of the problem". What does that mean ? I cant afford another car right now so any help with letting it run for another 100000 miles would be much appreciated.

Answer
Asim:I would say your rings are shot and so the oil is passing right through the engine. The noise you are now hearing would be the valves going. I am not sure what you can do to save the car, it has a lot of miles on it. The only way to reach another 1000,000 miles will be overhaul  your engine or put in a different engine all together. At some parts stores you can buy fluid to put into the engine well the oil to help with oil burning and the useing of oil. I would be checking that oil every day and watching it a bit closer then every other week. Check it everytime you get fuel then, I mean you could burn up your engine if you let it go without oil So the noise in the valves. I am not sure why your mechanic wants to add 80w90w transmission oil to your engine, other than it might be a bit heavier weight oil. But don't know if it gets cold where you live, because the heavier the oil it is harder for the car to start. You could try 10w50 weight but then the car might not start if the weather was to get cold. You need to take care of the car, treat it easy. Slow starts, slow down and don't push it to hard. Your engine is breaking down and if you push it to hard, it could blow a head gasket and then you would have to replace that. Because then it gets water in the oil and the car will not run. Wish I could help you more but engines just get old and they have to be repaired or replaced. Hope this helps and good luck!
