Mitsubishi Repair: engine dies with no check engine light, camshaft lobes, crank angle sensor

Question
hi... the car is a 96 standard non-turbo
the problem i am having is that the car ran fine all day for about 80 miles worth of driving...then as if you turned the key off the car died while driving about 65mph...i turned off the key then tried to start the car and it ran for about another 5 minutes...then after that it died and would restart but run for no set length of time...sometimes a minute ... sometimes 10 minutes....now at an idle it will run for ever just fine...then when i put it in first and take off sometimes it dies within a minute other times i make it to 3rd...but then it will die...it acts as if you unpluged the coil...it does not sputter studder or anything...it dies as clean as if you turned it off. and the most puzzling thing is that it does not give me any codes...even when hooked up to a scanner.  please this is my daily driver any help you can give me would be great..i work on 18 wheelers for a living so car work is nothing new but this is just driving me nuts...

Answer
Matt: This still sounds like the computer to me, but with no engine light... are you sure the engine light works? Ok, ok then a relay maybe, here is what my book says.. loose or faulty electrical connections at distributor(or crank angle sensor) coil or alternator. Insufficient fuel reaching the fuel injector(s), vacuum leak at the gasket between the intake manifold and throttle body or between the intake manifold and engine. Are you sure the fuel pump is delivering enough fuel? Can you hear the fuel pump, pump when you first turn on the key? Any chance you blew the head gasket? How old is the timing belt? Or the pulleys might be worn. Maybe the camshaft lobes worn? Just ideas on my part but things you can check. You could get a voltmeter, start with the battery and work your way through the car to make sure everything is getting the volts it needs to zip around the road. Surely you have a repair manual for the car, it will tell you of the right volts that the car should have as you check each part. Gee my husband drives an 18 wheeler for a living, and thinks riding in one of these cars after the truck is like rubbing your butt on the ground. Wait till I tell him about you. Oh so cool. Hope this helps and good luck!
