Mitsubishi Repair: 2000 Eclipse, throttle position sensor, coolant temp

Question
I have a 2000 Mits Eclipse that stalled while driving. I have compression, spark, @fuel. It will not start. It backfies back through the intake when I crank it, but only at WOT. If I spin it w/o the throttle cracked open, it will fire intermittently, but not start. The timing cover is off right now, and everything is lined up. When I first tested it, I had a P0335 code, crank sensor, so I replaced it, and no change. There are now no codes present. Both coils fire, and Injectors fire, yet no start. Any ideas?

Answer
Hi Chad,

As a person who tends to go for the easier fixes first, and as you didn't indicate that it was something you've looked into, I would initially tend to suggest a tune-up. A cracked distributor cap can cause havoc in that respect. Changing the cap, rotor and spark plugs would be my first approach.

Second, which you appear to have already done, would be to code the car, testing sensors and the ECU.

Beyond that I'd have to suggest you seek some professional advice. Sorry I couldn't be of more assistance.

Good Luck.

Follow up: According to my book, which is for '93-'97 models, the possibilities are:

Ignition Coil (you said you had spark)
Distributor (ignition system was suggested- I was uninformed as to the system type)
Fuel Filter (you said you had fuel)
Engine Mechanical (any number of things)
Camshaft Sensor/Dist. pick-up (you've coded the vehicle)
Ignition Module/Engine Computer (ignition system was suggested-I was uninformed as to the system type/suggested the ECU)

Possible but not probable:

Throttle Position Sensor (you've coded the vehicle)
Coolant Temp. Sensor (you've coded the vehicle)
MAP or MAF sensor (you've coded the vehicle)
Vacuum Leak (my failure to mention)
Idle Control System (my failure to mention)

Not sure what more I can do for you.

Good Luck!
