Mitsubishi Repair: Maybe Turbo? stalled on me., mitsubishi eclipse gst, garrett t25

Question
1990, Mitsubishi, Eclipse GST,and a  Manaul Trany

I installed the GARRETT T25 turbo. I took out for a test Drive to make sure everything was ok. Then About a block down the road it stalled on me. I heard a little ticking but did not sound serious. It was at about 3,500 Rpm, then just out of no where...Broke Down. It seems like its not getting fuel, air, or maybe a vacumm leak?/boost leak? Also I was maybe thinking that it could be a sensor? If you could tell me I would appreciate it, thx.

Answer
Barry,
Vacuum or boost leaks can cause this problem, and should definitely be checked with a new turbo install.  It's common to miss a hose, install the wrong hose, or for an old hose to develope a leak when installing a new turbo.

With more air entering the system, your fuel pump needs to work harder to keep up with amount of air entering the intake.  Check your fuel pump to make sure it's getting proper power and putting out enough fuel.  Along with that, the extra power required puts a larger strain on the alternator.  Have your alternator tested to make sure it's putting out the proper voltage and current.  It should be putting out around 14 volts and around 70 amps when running the engine at 2000 RPMs.  Your battery should be maintaining 12 volts with the car off.

Another item to check is your car's computer.  Read this article for more information:

If your ECU is damaged, it will cause stalling, rough idle, and even ticking noises.  Inspect if for damage.
Good luck!
