Mitsubishi Repair: Starter issue, starter motor, mitsu

Question
I recently had my starter replaced on my 1999 Mitsu. Galant V6.  Immediately after the starter was replaced I went to drive the car but everytime I would stop the car would cut off.  My mechanic said that after the starter is replaced on this type of car it has to be driven for 5 miles for the computer system to recognize the new starter.  Well I tried that and it still does the same thing.  Do you have any suggestions as to what could possibly be wrong?

Answer
James,
I've never heard of having to drive around for 5 miles for the computer to recognize the new starter, but I'm not too familiar with that year of Galant.  The starter only is active when the key is turned to the START position, and inactive the rest of the time, so I don't know what the mechanic was talking about.

I would think the mechanic may have misaligned the starter motor with the transmission flywheel, and when you come to a stop, the transmission slows too much and the idle cuts out.  Next time you drive and you're coming to a stop, put the car in neutral and see if the engine stays running.

I would take your car back to that mechanic and insist they fix whatever it is they broke, or at least figure out what the problem is.
Good luck!
