Mitsubishi Repair: 1995 Mitsubishi Eclipse RS dies on Interstate at 75MPH, crank shaft, mitsubishi eclipse

Question
Ok here is the problem. I have a 1995 Mitsubishi Eclipse RS non-turbo 2.0 liter DOHC motor and lately the motor has been dying on me. Problem usually happens when I am driving down the interstate at 75MPH and all of a sudden the RPMs will drop down to 0 like the motor has been killed. Sometimes it will startup automatically as I am driving and sometime I have to come to a complete stop and restart the engine, I am not able to restart the engine while the car is in motion. Lately I have had to come to a complete stop and wait about 10-15min before the engine will restart. I have tried replacing the fuel pump, fuel filter, spark plugs, & the crank shaft sensor not helping the problem at all. When the car dies the check engine light doesn’t come on so there is no way for me to pull a code from the computer. I have taken it to the local Mitsubishi dealer in town and they haven’t been able to diagnose the problem. This issue is very sporadic and only happens maybe once a month. Any help would be appreciated. Also when I am sitting at a stop light or a stop sign the RPMs will fluctuate a tinny bit. When I first purchased the car the lady that owned it before me blew the timing belt and the whole top half of the motor was replaced. Please Help. Thanks

Answer
Jason,
Try to make note of the weather conditions when this happens.  If you notice this happens more frequently when it's raining, that could indicate excess water entering the air filter or possibly even getting into the fuel tank.

I would also have your battery and alternator load tested.  If you are still using the original alternator, it may be starting to fail.  Major auto parts stores like AutoZone can load test your battery and alternator for free.  Be sure your battery terminals are clean and free of corrosion.

I can understand that this problem can be hard to diagnose, since it only happens sporadically.  But try to make note of all the conditions that are going on when this does occur;  every thing from weather conditions to the amount of gas is in the tank.
Good luck!
