Mitsubishi Repair: 94 Galant not starting, crank sensor, mobile mechanic

Question
Hi,

I have a 94 Galant, V6 24V with manual transmission. This car has been very reliable in the past, but now it won't start. Last week, I started my car as per normal but the Check Engine Light came on. The car did not stall and everything seemed normal (except the Check Engine Light) until I turned the engine off. Then it would not restart. I called a mobile mechanic to look at it and he said that everything seemed to be working, but there was no spark. After testing for about half an hour, he disconnected the Crank Sensor and then reconnected it and the car was able to start and the Check Engine Light was no longer on so he diagnosed the problem as a faulty Crank Sensor. I drove the car around without problem for a few days, and then as I was driving, the Check Engine Light came back on. Again, the car did not stall and operated normally through stops and starts and traffic, until I reached my destination and turned the engine off. Now the car will not start. If the Crank Sensor became faulty, wouldn't that cause the car to stall? I have tried replacing the cars computer (ECU), but the car still won't start. What could have become faulty that would cause this problem? Any ideas would helpful.

Thank you for your time.

Answer
Zulfqar,
To truly know why the check engine light (CEL) keeps coming on, you'll need to have you car's computer scanned for diagnostic codes.  Cars made before 1996 have ODB-I scan ports, and places that offer free scans (like AutoZone, Advanced Auto, etc.) are usually unable to scan those computers.  You'll want to take your car to a mechanic that has access to a scan tool that'll work with older cars.  Odds are, you have a sensor or emmissions component that is malfunctioning, and is causing your inability to start.  You may have the best luck taking your car to the dealership to fix your problem.  They typically charge more for repairs but they should be able to fix the problem properly the first time, and they guarantee their parts and service.
Good luck!
