Mitsubishi Repair: 1996 Galant - no reverse/weak reverse gear, mitsubishi galant, level surface

Question
Hi I have a 1996 Mitsubishi Galant that makes a squealing sound when going from idle up to speed. Changed the belts - squealing still there. Also in reverse gear on a level surface the car will back up. Trying to back up a small hill and it will not move. Is there any connection? Are there any reverse bands that can be adjusted? I have an old Jag XJ6 and every so offten I adjust the forward or reverse bands when I detect any slipping. How can I troubleshoot this reverse problem? I am very mechanically inclined but this is my first Mitsubishi and I am trying to get a handle on how the trans works. Thanks in advance.Alyn

Answer
As far as the squealing sound..it might be that the pulley is glazed.. try spraying it with belt dressing,...shouldnt squeal after new belts, make sure tensioner isnt to tight or too lose..as far as reverse gear...you would have to drop the tranny and open it up and check the belts..as far as tranny breakdown..I couldnt tell you..

Good Luck!
