Hi,

Need help on removal of the crankshaft pulley on a '97 Montero Sport LS.  Looks like it needs a special tool to keep it from turning in order to remove the center bolt (please also verify if bolt turns counterclockwise for removal).  Need it out to replace timing belt and water pump.
Appreciate you expertise in this matter, thank you!

Robert,
Replacing the timing belt can be a difficult procedure.  There is a special tool the dealership uses to hold the crank still when they remove the crank bolt.  The torque on that bolt is usually over 100 ft-lbs, so it takes a lot of force to remove it.  The bolt should be removed counterclock wise like all standard bolts.  You may be able to make your own specialty tool and attach it to the crank sprocket and the engine blockto keep it steady while you crack that bolt free.  Else, you can order the special tool from Miller Special Tool online store.  Here's the URL:

Good luck!

Answer
Robert,
Unfortunately, I do not know where the specific timing marks are for that vehicle.  You can try to search on various auto formus or you can even purchase the factory service manual for your Montero at your local Mitsubishi dealership.
Good luck!
