Mitsubishi Repair: Fan switch, advanced auto parts, mitsubishi galant

Question
1997, Mitsubishi Galant,ES, auto

The switch to turn on/off the fan for the AC/heater works sometimes, doesn't sometimes.  Sometime I leave it in the on position, and after a while it may or may not come on.

Before this problem, I noticed that sometime at night when the dash lights were on (but not all of the time) when I would adjust the fan, temp dial, or the dial that determines where the air will blow (defroster, feet, etc.) the light, just there at the area when the dials/switches are, would go out, but the fan/AC/heat would remain on.

Any change this would be something I could repair myself?

I appreciate your help and advice.

Answer
Jer,
You should first have your battery and alternator load tested.  If a major component in your charging system is not functioning correctly, it will cause sporatic problems with dash lights and accessory components.  Most major auto parts stores like AutoZone and Advanced Auto Parts will load test your battery and alternator for free.

But if this is a switch problem, I wouldn't recommend doing it yourself.  This could take too long and become a bigger hassle than it's worth once you get half way through.  But if you do realy want to attempt this yourself if you're sure its the switch, I would recommend getting a repair manual for your car to help with the take-apart procedure.
Good luck!
