Mitsubishi Repair: Intermitent problems, spark plug wires, dirty fuel

Question
I have recently purchased a 95 eclipse, 2.0 non-turbo, 5-speed.  However I was told that the engine was replaced with one from a '96 eclipse.  Occasionally when I am excelerating, normally when I get int 3rd gear, the engine practically shuts of, I can fully depress the accellerator and get no response.  Sometimes it will start working again sometimes it won't.  As I mentioned this is not happening all the time but it does happen fairly frequently.  I have also noticed that if I let it idle for a while the rpm's can get real low and the car will shut off.  I have also recently added an after market intake, and spark plug wires.  Thanks for your time.

Answer
J.R.,
If you did not see this problem before you installed the aftermarket intake, you should switch back to the stock intake and see if you still have this problem.  Also, if the new spark plugs you're using are rated colder than the stock, that can also be contributing to your problem.

With an upgraded intake, your engine can now take in a lot more air.  But this means your fuel system must work even harder to pump enough gas to your engine to keep it going.  You may have a dirty fuel filter, clogged injectors, or a weak fuel pump.  You should also verify that all the plugs are firing.  If you're not getting a strong spark, you may need new plug wires.  If you're not getting any spark at all, you should check your ignition coil.  If all else fails, have the battery and alternator tested.  It would also be a good idea to have your timing checked and even having the belt replaced if there's more than 60,000 miles on the current belt.
Good luck!
