Mitsubishi Repair: idle control on 1999 Mitsubishi Galant, throttle position sensor, mitsubishi galant

Question
I recently replaced the engine mounts for the car and as I drove off
from the repair shop the engine quickly shut off. I then asked my
mechanic to take a quick look and he told me that the idle control must
be bad.
He took it out and cleaned up the carbon build up. We also replaced
the spark plugs. Now when I step on the gas pedal it sort of
struggles to go forward. I usually have to slowly press on the
pedal to run smoothly but a quick press on the  pedal it struggles
again. Do I need to replace the idle control? Or is there more to it?
Note: I also reset the computer by taking the battery out for a
minute.

Answer
Dave,
It may be the idle control, but those usually go bad over time, and you would probably have noticed symptoms prior to your engine mount work.  Don't replace the idle control motor before it's thoroughly inspected.  Those are expensive items.

From your description, it sounds like an ignition problem, or a possible fuel restriction.  Your problem may just require a tune-up.  If you have the 2.4L engine, have the plugs and wires replaced.  And have the ignition coils checked to be sure they are firing.  If you have the 3.0L engine, have the distributor cap, distributor rotor, plugs, and wires replaced.

Other items that should be replaced in your tune-up should include air filter, fuel filter, and PCV valve.  Items to have inspected should include timing belt, EGR valve, idle control motor, throttle body, throttle position sensor, and fuel pump.   Your problem will probably be found and fixed in one of these items.
Good luck!
