Mitsubishi Repair: Timingf Belt Tensioner, timing belt tensioner, timing belt replacement

Question
Hey. I have a 95 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS..Automatic Transmission..I had a question about the Timing Belt Tensioner... We were changing the timing belt and he thought the timing belt tensioner was messed up because the thing that sticks out of the top didn't pivot..So we just assumed that it was worn out, because we thought it was supposed to move...it's really stiff and we can't move it at all..so we went on ebay and bought another one well i just got it..and it's the same way mine is..the silver part sticking up doesn't move at all... I've heard it's supposed to pivot, but then I also heard that it's supposed to be really tight and that if YOU can move it that easily it's worn out... Can you help? Because our car kinda is just sittin' there right now not knowing if the timing belt tensioner is broke..thank ya.... Jennifer

Answer
Jennifer,
The tensioner should be really stiff, and the only way to retact is with a bench vise.  You can refer to this site for tips on replacing the timing belt in your car:

I would also highly recommend you have a copy of the factory service manual with you when performing a timing belt replacement.
Good luck!
