Mitsubishi Repair: Noise from under the car, clutch slave cylinder, worn clutch

Question
I have a 1997 RS Eclips. As driving when I shift I heard a knocking sound as if my engine was banging againts the transmision. I took it in and my mechanic said that two bolts came loose underneath the car. After they repaced the bolts the problem went away but now I hear a rubing sound underneath the pasenger side. I took the car back and they said that they cant find any problems and to just leave it alone. The sound is hard to explain. Sounds like when you sit in an office chair at home or in the office and you can hear the air shock from the chair as you sit.
This happens when I take off and when I stop. I do not hear this noise while on the highway.

Answer
Gene,
That noise you described sounds like it could be a worn clutch release cylinder; also referred to as the clutch slave cylinder.  It's typical for these to wear overtime and start to leak.  Also, if your mechanic for some reason had to drain and refill your clutch fluid, there might be air in the line still.  See if you notice this noise even with the car off, and you shift through your gears while using the clutch.

The noise may also be coming from your shifter cables that go from your gearshift to your transmission.  They may have been moved to a slightly different position when your mechanic was working on your car.  This shouldn't cause any problems though.  But keep an eye on your clutch fluid level and keep an ear out to see if that new noise gets worse.
Good luck!
