Mitsubishi Repair: 1989-1990 Plymouth Laser, drive belts, plymouth laser

Question
Hi Anthony, thanks for the work you do here!  I have a 1990 Plym Laser, purchased mid '89.  On my way into work today, about 10 miles driving, my dash lights came on...the battery light and the brake light...both red and a amber light that I think represents the overfill?  I'm a single girl and don't know much about this kind of thing and hope you can point me in the right direction?  I did turn around and drive the 10 miles back home, noticing only that my power steering was gone?  Thank you for anything you can tell be about what may be wrong?  I've taken very good care of the car and haven't had a problem in a long time? Judith

Answer
Judith,
It doesn't sound like your problem is too serious.  My guess would be that your power steering belt has broke or is slipping.  This can effect the tension on the alternator belt.  If the alternator is not producing the amount of power the car needs or it's malfunctioning, it will illuminate all those dash lights that you mentioned.

If you have not had your drive belts (power steering, alternator, A/C) replaced within the last 30,000 miles, you should have those replaced.  This is not too expensive and its a regular maintenance item that many times goes overlooked.  Also, if you've never had your alternator replaced, you should have it load tested and replaced if it's not performing as it should.  Most Mitsubishi alternators last roughly 7-10 years, so you're pretty lucky to have one that lasted 16 years if you're still on the original.

Most local mechanics can easily handle replacing your belts.  Along with having the belts replaced, be sure to have them load test the battery and alternator.  Once the worn components are replaced, your car will run just as good as it once did.
Good luck!
