Mitsubishi Repair: 98 Galant having problems starting and running, mitsubishi galant, cap cap

Question
Hi Anthony
I have a 98 Mitsubishi Galant, Automatic.  My car died, so I replaced the battery.  It wasn't running right, so I got the wires cleaned off (they were coroded).  My car ran for a while, and drove about 8 miles.  It died in my parking lot and won't start back up.  It sounds like it's trying to start, but it doesn't.  I was told my alternator looks fine.  Also, when it's about to die, my radio shuts off and my lights get dim...I have no idea what's going on.  Please help!  Cori

Answer
Cori,
Unless you had your alternator load tested by either a mechanic or at a major auto parts store (AutoZone, Advanced AutoParts, etc.), I wouldn't rule out the alternator as being the problem.  Other routine maintenace items like spark plugs, plug wires, distributor cap, cap rotor, air filter and fuel filter should also be checked and replaced as needed.  You can check your owners manual for the scheduled time/mileage that these items should be replaced, but typically every 30,000 miles or 3 years is common.  Your timing belt and accessories should be replaced every 60,000 miles.
Good luck!
