Mitsubishi Repair: 94 Mitsubishi Galant Where is the Fuel Relay, mileage intervals, mitsubishi galant

Question
1994 Mitsubishi Galant ES, automatic with 113,000 miles. Very good condition-regular maintenance maintained. Car never been in shop.

Problem: Car was sitting idle, engine acted as though it wanted to stall; gave it gas, engine accelerated and then killed. Tried to start the car again; it turned over one time and killed. Continued to try to start car and it will not start.

Troubleshooting: Checked the fuel pump and it still works. Trying to locate the fuel relay, which the Haynes book states it is located behind the radio and console panel. Don't know what it looks like and can not identify the part. The supply stores in my area have indicated to me that they can not locate the part without a part number. So, I can not identify the part and they do not know the part number.

Other than the relay, is there anything I can trouble shoot to locate my problem?

Answer
Jason,
If the fuel pump is working, then that would indicate the relay associated with it is fine.  If you see a relay located where your Haynes manual indicates, you should be able to hook up a volt meter to it, and test for voltage when you turn your key to the ON position.

But stalling can be caused by many things.  With 113k miles on the car, your engine is likely to need a tune-up.  Items like spark plugs, plug wires, distributor cap, fuel filter, air filter, transmission fluid, drive belts, timing belt, and all other scheduled maintenance items should be replaced or serviced.  Even your battery and alternator should be tested to be sure they are putting out enough power.  Your owners manual will show the time/mileage intervals in which those items should be serviced.  If need be, have the car towed to a mechanic to get a tune-up and give it a full inspection.  Most likely, it's a regular maintenace item that failed, and replacing it should remedy your problem.
Good luck!
