Mitsubishi Repair: 2001 Galant fuel filter location?, mitsubishi galant, professional mechanic

Question
I'm purchasing a 2001 Mitsubishi Galant and the current owner says the fuel filter needs to be changed but they can't locate it.  Can you tell me where it is?  In older cars, they were easy to locate.  Not sure where it is in the newer models.

The car runs fine but sometimes dies at a red light.  They think the fuel filter may be the problem.  It has 51000 miles on it.

Thanks for your help!

Answer
Pat,
I clogged fuel filter usually won't cause the occasional stalling.  That is typically caused by an ignition problem or air intake problem.  But replacing the fuel filter is a very good idea if it has never been done on that car.  I do not know exactly where the fuel filter is located on your particular year of Galant.  But the typical place is on the firewall under the hood.  But on many newer models, the fuel filter is actually located underneath the car; near the rear of the car.

I would highly recommend having a professional mechanic inspect the car.  At 60,000 miles, many regular maintence items will need to be replaced; from inexpensives items like spark plugs and wire, to critical and much more expensive items like timing belts.  This is usually one of the reasons why folks tend to sell their cars around 60k miles.  So have a mechanic inspect the car if you're serious about buying.
Good luck!
