Mitsubishi Repair: speedometer problems, mitsbishi, driven gear

Question
When I bought my 1995 mitsbishi ecilpse,2.0 GST automatic transmission the speedometer and odometer wasn't working so the mechicanic shop told me i needed a new speed sensor,i bought a new one and a new speedometer cluster it still didn't work. The mechicanic said the gear in the tranny and in the speed sensor is not working together but when he turns it manually it works so no one could figure out this problem. PLEASE HELP

Answer
Troy,
The speedometer linkage consists mainly of the speedo driven gear, the sleeve that goes over the gear, the cable that goes to your speedo cluster, and the needle that moves.  If your mechanic just bought the sleeve, it comes with the sensor, but not with the actual gear that goes in the tranny.  The problem may be in the transmission itself, and it's not making good contact with the speedo driven gear.  Turning it manually simply means there's a connection from the needle down to the sleeve and even the gear, but the gear may not be mating properly with the internal gear in the transmission for whatever reason.  You may even want to have a transmission shop inspect this if no one else configure it out.
Good luck!
