Mitsubishi Repair: 97 Eclipse Auto, 79k miles, RX, eclipse auto, drive belts

Question
The car makes a noise when idling. When the hood is open it is from the left front side (passenger). The seller says it has been doing this for a few months and thinks it is a loose fan belt. I am concerned it is something more serious like a water pump or alternator. Car drives fine. Any advise?

Answer
John,
You should definitely have a mechanic inspect the belts and all other components.  You should find out from the seller when the last time all the belts were changed; this includes all drive belts, timing belt, balance belt, water pump and tensioner.  All of those items should have been replaced when the car reached 60k miles.  If those belts and components were never replaced, you should have them replaced ASAP.  It can be an expensive service, but it can cost you a lot more if you let it go and the timing belt breaks while you're driving.  Have it checked out as soon as you can.
Good luck!
