Mitsubishi Repair: Mitsubishi Repair, exhaust pipes, xhaust

Question
Hi, just bought a 1996 space wagon, 16valve,manual transmission a month ago. First few weeks the car is ok. But lately, the car is hard to start in the morning or when it is cold. I have to step on the gas a little to make the engine continue to run otherwise it will die. And I noticed a white smoke coming out of the xhaust. Also after starting, the idle is rough. What do you think is the problem? I'm planning to have the car tuned-up. Do you think it's a nice idea? thanks!

Regards,
 Jun

Answer
Jun,
A tune-up is definitely a good idea; especially with a used car that is nearly 10 years old.  Cold starts in the morning can be rough if the battery, alternator, or starter motor are signifigantly worn.  When you bring it in for a tune-up, be sure to have the mechanic inspect all 3 of those items.  Replacing the spark plugs, plug wires, and other common tune-up items should help remedy your rough idle.  A little white smoke on start up (especially as the weather gets colder) is normal.  Water condenses and collects in your exhaust pipes when you let is sit overnight.  When you start up your car the next day, that water will evaporate, and that's probably the white smoke you're seeing.
Good luck!
