Mitsubishi Repair: 94 gt 3000 auto trans, auto transmissions, pressure checks

Question
I have just purchased  this 94 gt 3000 2 wheel drive.previous owner states transmission works only part time.I have not done pressure checks or pulled the pan. I have noticed  that sometimes it will go right into reverse and first and the next time (shut off and restart)... it will not have forward and reverse slips...I am looking for general problems with this transaxle... Seems to be a  pressure problem.... I have 22 years experiance with domestic auto transmissions never and japanese transmissions. debating repairing my self or exchange for new unit. many special tools needed for a overhaul? thanks  matt

Answer
Matt,
It is a good idea to do a pressure test and pull the pan to see if you can see any obvious problems.  You may just have an extremely dirty tranny fluid filter.  Also, inspect your transaxle control unit (TCU).  Intermittent problems like the ones you're mentioning can occur if the TCU or wiring harness is damaged or malfunctioning.

With your experience, you shouldn't have much problem rebuilding the tranny, though I would highly recommending getting the factory service manual for your car.  I don't believe there are any special tools needed that cannot be obtained from a local auto parts store.  The factory service manual will specify any special tool that might be needed.
Good luck!
