Mitsubishi Repair: misubishi lancer 93 auto transmission problem, forward gears, automatic transmissions

Question
Anthony,I have a 1993 lancer 1.6 glx automatic which up to this point has been running perfectly with basic maintanence.Last week while driving along a staight road at about 50 m.p.h.and with no warning at all the transmission stopped working.
The effect was as if the gears were in neutral,no forward gears and no reverse. Our mechanic checked the obvious;c.v. joints, a.t.f.and has opened the gearbox but can see nothing. The problem is that here in Northern Spain automatic transmissions are a rarity so our mechanic is a bit lost. Hopefully you can help pinpoint what or where the problem is.Many Thanks.

Answer
Paul,
Unfortunately, the older Lancers were never sold in the US, so I have little knowledge of them.  You can have your mechanic remove the Transaxle Control Unit (TCU) and check it for any internal damage.  The TCU is the computer used to control your transmission functions.  If the TCU is damaged, it could contribute to this problem.

Also, a possible problem could be worn spindles on the axle shafts, which would require new axles.  Though a new transmission may not be necessary, you should continue to look for a rebuild until you know exactly what the problem is.  If you cannot find a rebuilt transmission, you may have better luck finding a transmission shop that could rebuild your own transmission.
Good luck!
