Mitsubishi Repair: 1994 galant valve ticking, leaky capacitors, electrolytic capacitors

Question
Hey Anthony,
i just read your question about the '94 Eclipse valve noise and you said that the valve noises are casued by small lifters and that it could be fixed by full-synthetic oil.

Now i have a 94, Galant, hatchback, manual. and i have the exact same problem and also the small ticking noise behind the dash.. i dont know if it is there is 2 noises or if its just one noise or if it could be the ECU or ECM problem that i have heard about, about the leaking electrolytic capacitors made by Rubicon Electric.

any help why these noises are occuring would be great..

Cheers
Shaun

Answer
Shaun,
The lifter noise may be able to be quieted with a synthetic oil, but if that doesn't help, they would have to be pulled and cleaned.  It's not a difficult process and the haynes and chiltons service manuals available should have a procedure for doing so.

The ticking noise coming from behind the dash could indeed be your ECM.  If you haven't read the article I had posted on this already, here it is:

I would recommend removing your ECU and examining the circuit board for signs of leaky capacitors and damage.  If those capacitors are not leaking much now, they will eventually.  They all do over time.
Good luck!
