Mitsubishi Repair: balance shaft, shaft bearing, balance shaft

Question
i have a 92 eclipse 2.o gs manual and the engine started knocking all of a sudden but only when the engine warms up. I asked my auto tech teacher and he said it was a bearing so i took off the oil pan and checked all the bearings. The connecting rods and main bearings are all there but i noticed that the rear balance shaft bearing was missing and i could shake the balance shaft up an down.I did an oil pressure test and im only getting 5 psi. Could the missing bearing in the balance shaft be causing my low oil pressure which will cause the knocking sound? If it is the balance shafts i think im gonna get a balance shaft eliminator kit, is this a good safe idea? Thanks.

Answer
Chris,
The problem with using an eliminator kit is that you will have increased vibration in your cabin.  Also, the process to install the eliminator kit is pretty involved.  You should have some good experience and knowledge of your engine, plus you'll want easy access to some good tools.

But the benefits of a successfully installed eliminator kit are that you reduce the risk of your balance shaft belt breaking and taking out your timing belt.  Also, it makes replacing your timing belt much easier.  But the reason many folks do this is for slightly increase horsepower and faster revs.  If you decide to perform this mod, be sure to read as much information on the procedure as possible and have a backup car that you can drive incase it take longer than you planned.
Good luck!
