Mitsubishi Repair: Clutch pedal is dead, clutch slave cylinder, clutch fluid

Question
Hello,

I recently purchased a 1991 Galant VR-4. I took a gamble on the car b/c it did not run when i picked it up, but, the pontential was there. My only problem left on the car is the clutch pedal does nothing. It sits on the floor and can be manually raised or lowered but doesnt do it on its own. If i pump it with my hand, the fluid doesnt move at all in the reservoir, there are no leaks of any kind. I can start the car in gear and it moves, so the clutch isnt slipping etc. It seems as though there is somthing wrong with the clutch pedal being "attached" to anything, it swings dead. Any probs with these cars and bolts that fall out of place?  any ideas would be greatly appreciated,

Dave

Answer
Dave,
Look for the clutch pedal return spring attached to the pedal.  If that spring is not present, that's one possibility for your pedal not moving.

I would also recommend replacing the clutch slave cylinder (also called the clutch release cylinder) and either rebuild or replace the master clutch cylinder, and have your clutch pedal adjusted after doing so.  Be sure you have an adequate amount of clutch fluid, and that all the air has been bled out of the system.  There are several bushings, spacers and little bolts that all attach to the clutch pedal to allow it to move properly.  Visit you local dealerships parts department and pick up any parts that might be missing.
Good luck!
