Mitsubishi Repair: No Spark, plymouth lasers, haynes book

Question
I know your expertise is with the Mitsubishi Eclipse, but I have a 93 Eagle Talon and they're pretty much the same car.  It has the 2.0 litre, DOHC 16 valve non-turbo(ES) with over 200K miles  It is also an automatic, if that makes a difference in this case.  Further, I can find no one in my area with any expertise with the DSM vehicles.  They're good at scratching their heads, but that's about it.  I drove my Talon home one day after it had been running great.  My wife took it to work and parked it. 6 hours later, it wouldn't start and that's where it's been since.  The only thing I did to it that day was install a headlight bulb.

I checked by grouding plug wires and #2 and #3 aren't getting spark.  Believeing it was a bad coil pack, I obtained one that had been used and installed it.  Still no spark on 2-3.   1-4 have a spark you could weld with, but nothing on the other 2.  By putting 2-3's plug wires on 1-4, I determined that the plug wires were fine.  I put 1-4 plug wires on 2-3 and got nothing.  With the used coil pack I knew there was a chance that the same coil could be bad on both.  So I took the good one(1-4) and put in place of 2-3.  Nothing.  Is there something about this set up that is a trait of these vehicles.  I don't want to spend 200.00 for a new coil pack and it be like a 1.00- fuse or something.  Any ideas, or should I have it towed to some place to be worked on or just shoot it and put it out of my misery?  I really like the car and 425 miles to the tank full is hard to give up right now.

I have a Haynes book and using an ohmmeter,I checked for opens and grounds.  Found none.
Primary resistance was supposed to be 0.7 to 0.86 ohms.  It was 1.4.
Secondary resistance was 13.4 on both sets of coil terminals.

I appreciate any help at all.

Answer
Jim,
The Talon is actually the exact same car as the Eclipse.  The Chrysler group simply changed a couple body parts, but internally it's the same car.  Both cars (and the Plymouth Lasers) rolled off the exact same assembly line.

Your problem could be bad timing. If your timing belt has slipped, or your tensioner is worn, that can cause your timing to be off, and that will prevent spark to your plugs.  Since your ignition is controlled by your car's computer (ECU), the ECU may be receiving a bad signal from your cam angle sensor (CAS) and preventing those plugs from firing.  Your timing belt and tensioner should be replaced every 60,000 miles.

On the same note on your timing being off, it may be that your CAS is malfucntioning.  You should be able to inspect it per your Haynes manual.  There is also the possibility that your your ECU is malfucntioning.  Read this article for further information:

If your ECU is malfunctioning, there is a good chance you'll loose spark.  Have it inspected to be sure.
Good luck!
