Mitsubishi Repair: Overheat, coolant system, mitsubishi eclipse

Question
I have a 1992 Mitsubishi Eclipse with a manual transmission.  I'm not too sure on any of the specs on the model of my car, but I do know it's a 2.0L engine.  Could you give me some ways to diagnose the problem I've been having?  About a month ago, my engine started overheating.  I was caught up in the vicious circle:  I needed the car for work, and either I had the money and no time to fix it, or the time and no money to fix it.  I have removed my thermostat and housing, and noticed the thermostat is done.  The "bracket that holds the spring in place has snapped.  I assume this an effect of the overheating.  Is there anything you can suggest for me to find the root problem and possibly fix it?  I had been running the car for the last month, however, it has finally told me to "Quit it!".  It starts, and seems to run smoothly, though I haven't taken it anywhere for the past week to 10 days.  Any siggestions you may have will be greatly appreciated.  Thank You.

Answer
Scott,
Most overheating problems are caused by failing thermostats.  I would recommend replacing the thermostat, radiator cap, and draining your entire coolant system.  Be sure to empty out your overflow bottle as well.  Then refill the system with the standard 50/50 mixture of anti-freeze and distilled water.  Be sure to get all air bubbles out of the system.  Most auto parts stores sell repair manuals for your car, and I recommend getting one of those to assist you.

If your car is still overheating after that, your problem could be caused by a worn water pump, clogged radiator, or possibly a bad sensor.
Good luck!
