Mitsubishi Repair: interior lights turning on and off while driving, door switches, rubber boot

Question
I have a 2002 Montero Limited SUV.  Within the last 2 months my interior lights suddenly started turning on for about 2 seconds when I am making turns or pressing the brakes.  It does not happen all the time, probably about 25% of the time.  My husband checked my fuses and said they looked fine, but I don't understand why it is happening or how to stop it.

Answer
Yvonne,
Your problem most likely lies in one of the door switches.  If you open all your doors, you'll see a little switch in each door frame, covered by a little rubber boot.  When the door opens, that switch activates, and turns on the interior lights.

It is possible that one of your doors is not closing properly and completely, and that is causing the door to move slightly during turns and braking.  If the door moves enough, the switch on the door frame will activate, causing the interior lights to come on.  Typically, a little "open door" indicator light would also illuminate on your instrument panel if the door was open.  Check to see if you notice that happening the same time your interior lights come on.  Then, just figure out which door is the problem had that it fixed.  The problem might lie in the door being off center, or in the switch itself.
Good luck!
