Mitsubishi Repair: 1996 misubishi galant, crank angle sensor, altinator

Question
I have a 1996 misubishi galant 4 door front wheel drive 2.4 automatic transsmission. We think the car needs a crank angle sensor but we have no idea where to find this part at on the engine and we have no idea of what it looks like. We were driving the car and it just quite running. My husband say the car is not firing. it will turn over but it won't start. We have put a new altinator on the car acouple of months ago and also we have put a new timing belt in the car also we have but a new front end underneath the car as well

Answer
Melanie,
The crank angle sensor (CAS) is located next to the water pump.  It attaches to a bracket near the top of engine, and it's cable runs down to the crank.  The CAS part number is MD301215 and you should be able to order it from a dealership for about $75.  But contact your local dealership and have your VIN ready when ordering the part so they can be sure you're getting the exact part you need.  Plus, once you get a new one, you'll know exactly what it looks like and you'll be able to find it very easily from the location description I provided.

You should also perform a compression test on your engine just to be sure all cylinders are ok.  Be sure to also check the fuel system too.  If the car's computer does not detect that fuel is being fed to the engine, it will not allow the plugs to fire.
Good luck!
