Mitsubishi Repair: not starting, advanced auto parts, starter relay

Question
Hi...

I drove home from work today, stopped at the store and when I came out, my 2001 Mit. Eclipse would not start. It was dead, not even trying to turn over. Any ideas?
                      Thanks

Answer
John,
This problem can be caused by a bad battery, bad starter, bad starter relay, a bad alternator, or a combination of the items listed.

First, have your battery recharged and load tested.  Just about any auto parts store (AutoZone, Advanced Auto Parts, PepBoys) or service garage can do this for you.  If your battery charges and tests out fine, then have the same place that tested your battery also test your alternator.  Your alternator should be putting out around 14 volts and 75 amps while it's running.  If the alternator is not putting out enough power to charge your battery, your battery will quickly die and not be able to start your car.  The alternator will need to be replaced.

But if after charging your battery, the engine still does not start, your problem is most likely your starter motor and/or starter relay.  You'll need a mechanic to replace your starter and check your relay.
Good luck!
