Mitsubishi Repair: Check Engine Light, mitsubishi galant, electrical harness

Question
Hi Anthony:  I have a '94 Mitsubishi Galant GS.  5 speed 16V, DOHC, 2.4 liter.  The check engine light has been coming on intermittently.  What should I check for to repair this?  Thanks for your help.

Answer
Grant,
For the check engine light (CEL) to come on intermittently usually indicates a sensor that is starting to go bad.  It can also be caused by an electrical harness that may have come loose.  I had a similar problem happen to me after I had changed my air filter.  There's an electrical harness on the box where you air filter goes.  If that harness is not making good contact, your CEL will come on and off.  But there are many electrical harness that would need to be checked.  You can look around your engine and see if you can visually see any loose connections.  If not, you'll have to take your car to a mechanic or the dealership for them to check your car's computer for trouble codes the next time your CEL comes on.  That will pinpoint exactly what's wrong.
Good luck!
