Mitsubishi Repair: 1994 Diamante will not crank or start, worst case scenario, power transistor

Question
We have a 1994 Diamante ES automatic, V6 SOHC.  The other night the car started right up and was moved a few feet, then turned off and about 5 minutes we went to start again and it would not crank (let alone start).  Only hear a click, like a relay picking up when the key was turned to start.  All other electrical works.  We tried shifting to neutral and starting - no help.

So, kind of at a loss why this would start & run fine one moment - the immediately have a complete loss of ability to crank the engine (can't even here the solenoid of the started being energized).

Any ideas?

Thnaks,  Glenn

FYI - The battery was replaced about a month ago and everything was working well with the exception of an intermitent low idle which seemed be be remedied by adding a fuel injector cleaner to the fuel.

Answer
Glenn,
For an engine that won't even turn over, that usually indicates a bad starter or starter relay.  But even if your starter was dead, that should not force your engine to stall out.  This could be a problem with your car's computer.  Read this article for further information:

If your ECU checks out fine, you'll want to have your ignition system checked.  The problem could be anywhere in the system from the ignition cylinder lock (where your key turns) to your spark plugs.  Items like your starter, alternator, ignition coil, power transistor, and even your battery should be checked.  Be sure to have all your fusible links and relays inspected as well.

Your worst case scenario could be that all your transmission fluid and/or engine oil had leaked out and your engine has seized.  If that's the case, your starter motor would not be able to turn the flywheel that turns your cranks and starts your engine. But you can easily check your engine oil level and transmission fluid level with their respective dipsticks.
Good luck!
