Mitsubishi Repair: loud tapping noise - battery doesnt charge, spark plug wires, mitsubishi galant

Question
Hi Anthnony,
I just purchased a 1996 Mitsubishi Galant 2.4 automatic. I got it very cheap and it has 100.000 miles on it. The problem is that it makes a very loud noise, like the engine is tapping or sounds like a clicking noise.
It kinda goes away when I accelerate.
And I think that the battery does not get recharged because it died on me. What do you think the problem might be?
Thanks
Henri

Answer
Henri,
Loud clicking or tapping noises coming from the top of the engine may be coming from your lifters or fuel injectors.  But if the noise seems to be coming from your alterantor area (where you belts are), you may have a failing alternator or overly tightened alternator belt.  Sometimes if the belt is on too tight, it can put excess strain on the pulley bearings and causing noises.  And if for sure your battery is not getting recharged, definitely have your alternator and battery checked.

Also check for any kind of electrical arching coming from your distributor cap or spark plug wires.  Your car may be due for a tune-up to replace your distributor cap, rotor, spark plugs and plug wires.
Good luck!
