Mitsubishi Repair: Brakes and rotors, brake pad shims, auto parts store

Question
2000 Mitz galant es 4 cylinder with drum back brakes - installed new brakes and rotors on front axle, but new brakes are squeaking.  What can be causing them to squeak?  what do i need to do for them to stop making noise?  Used lubricant on calipers...  installed Napa rotors and brakes..

Answer
Casey,
New brakes tend to sqeak if you got any grease or lubricant on the rotors or pads.  Also, new rotors usually have a thin film of oil on them to prevent them from rusting up while sitting on the shelf.  If you didn't clean them off before installing them, it will squeak for a short while.

But continuous squealing may indicate a worn or missing brake pad shims.  If you did not install new brake pad shims on your new pads, that will cause squealing while braking.  You can either buy some new shims or add some Brake-Quiet compound to the back of the brake pads.  Any of that can be purchased at just about any auto parts store.

But if your brakes also squeak even when you're not braking, that can indicate too much pressure in your brake line.  You can cure that by letting out a brake fluid by bleeding your calipers a little.
Good luck!
