Mitsubishi Repair: Vaccum hose/Idle, vacuum hoses, pressure control valve

Question
Hey Anthony,
I am having a problem with my 95 Eclipse non turbo 5spd 420A. My question is about some idle problem im having. Idle is purging, no miss, just had a head job. This started only after I blew a heater hose?. The IAC motor codes are 25 right? REPLACED IAC and still having idle purging. NOTICED wires running from IAC down to other wiring had been soaked in oil/water. OK SO MAYBE A SHORT...check,clean,spray with wire drier, replace wiring harness covers.. I was checking Vacuum hose and noticed on the back of Intake manifold there is from right to left the IAC then the Brake booster Vacuum, then a sensor, and then a three prong connecter for vacuum hoses. I think its called the purge control valve? My question is for each(3)connecter, what vacuum hoses runs off what connecter? Does one of these stay open? When I checked it, the middle connecter had no hose connected. One hose runs to the EGR and the other down towards the engine(both run off side prongs, middle open) Should the Middle prong be for the EGR hose? Hose looks like it doesnt fit right on side prong? Engine codes are only 25 and 55.  Engine light goes out sometimes and when idle purge occurs light will come on. What other vacuum hoses could I check other than around the throttle body? Can you think of what else might be causing idle purging? Thanks for your time, and your response is greatly appreciated.

Answer
Tony,
Code 55 is the "all clear" code, and 25 is "Target idle not reached (k200 r/min)" - Harness and connector / Idle air control motor / Vaccuum leak.  I got that information from a very informative web site:  http://www.2gnt.com

The tricky thing about the '95 Eclipse engine was that it was a transition year Eclipse; it contained both 1G and 2G (model years 89-94 & 95-99) engine set ups.  So, the position of the hoses where you see them may be different from where I know of.  The three hoses I believe you are referring to are the Purge control solenoid valve, Fuel pressure control valve (only for Turbo engines), and EGR control solenoid valve (you typically only see this on a California emmissions engine).  Since you have a non-turbo car, that middle hose may be the Fuel pressure control valve hose.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "idle purging".  There is a syndrome called "idle surging", which refers to your engine bouncing up and down after your engine is warmed up.  That usually is caused by a bad IAC motor, but you mentioned you replaced that so that shouldn't be your problem.  But if you believe you do have a vacuum leak somewhere, you might want to consider just replacing all 3 of those hoses.  Most auto parts stores sell vacuum hoses; just go in and ask for the diameter and length you want.  You can bring in a hose to show them the size.  Hoses are cheap and relatively easy to replace, so go with the cheaper fixes and see if it helps.
Good luck!
