Mitsubishi Repair: 3000gt ABS, mitsubishi 3000gt, mitsubishi dealership

Question
I am having the same problem as this guy, except mine idles fine: http://experts.about.com/q/824/3452027.htm
I have a 1993 Mitsubishi 3000GT SL  (V6-Manual-Stock).  I looked under the car, and took off the mud gurads, and found a big black cyclindrical thing that was making all of the noise.  I had to disconnect the hot wire to it just to drive.  The "ANTI LOCK" light is still on, and I can now lock the brakes if I try hard enough.  What is that little motor, and what is it doing wrong? How do I get it fixed?  I had to disconnect the battery at first to get it to stop, but as soon as i reconnected it a day later, the noise didn't stop.  Please Help.  Thanks.

Answer
Corey,
I've gotten this nearly exact same question from a '92 3000GT owner as well. I believe what you're hearing is your brake modulator, hydraulic unit. The function of this modulator is to regulate the amount of pressure your brakes are applying to your rotors when your car is braking. It acts very quickly when you car's computer senses your brakes are locking and activates your anti-lock braking system. If this brake modulator continues to operate after your car is turned off, there is a problem with it. The problem may be with the unit, a wiring connection, or the car's computer itself.

Tell your mechanic to check your hydraulic unit, brake modulator. Point them into the direction of the noise so they don't spend a lot of time (and your money) looking around for it. Hopefully, your problem is just a loose connection because a new brake modulator alone can cost anywhere from $1800-$2300! Get a couple mechanics opinions if your first mechanic recommends replacing it.

Also, back in 1996, Mitsubishi issued a 'Front Brake Hose Replacement' safety recall for your car.  I'd recommend calling your local Mitsubishi dealership, have your VIN handy, and ask if this recall has been performed on your car.  If it has not, you can take it to the dealership to have them replace the hose for free; regardless of warranty.  There is also the chance that the replacement hose would fix your problem.
Good luck!
