Mitsubishi Repair: POWER UNIT?, power transitor, mitsubishis

Question
I HAVE A NO SPARK PROBLEM ON A 90 MONTERO 3.0 V-6, YOU ARE AS CLOSE IN CATEGORY I COULD FIND. ANYWAY, CRANKS WELL, FUEL PUMP OK, IGNITION COIL GOOD ETC. TIMING BELT GOOD, BUT THERE IS A SMALL ELECTRICAL DEVICE MOUNTED NEXT TO IGNITION COIL THAT SAYS POWER UNIT ON IT . I'M TOLD IT HAS SOMETHING TO DO WITH COIL? ANY WAY TO TEST THIS UNIT OR WHAT SPECS SHOULD BE?THANKS FOR ANY HELP!!

Answer
Tommy,
The Power Transitor Unit (PTU) is responisble for suppling then removing current to each of the ignition coil primary circuits.  Its timing is regulated by your car's computer (ECU).  Off hand, I do not know the specs for your particular power transitor.  For other Mitsubishis I've tested, the unit should be seeing around 4-5 volts when current is flowing, and around 0.5 volts when it is switched off.  All this can be checked with the harness disconnected and the ignition switch in the ON position.  Other than that, I'm afraid I cannot be more specific.

It would also be a good idea for you to check your ECU as well, since it controls your power transitor.  Read this article for further information:

If your ECU appears to be damaged, that could explain the failure to create a spark.
Good luck!
